The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court has sentenced a staff of the Provident Fund (PF) office in Navi Mumbai to three years in jail.
The employee Kallakuri Vijay Ramarao was found guilty of charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act. He has been sentenced to three years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 50,000
Harpreet Singh Saluja, President of Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES), shared a LinkedIn post saying, “A special CBI court, sentenced a clerk from the Provident Fund Office (PFO) in Navi Mumbai to three years of imprisonment for accepting a bribe of Rs 3 lakh from a company.”
“The clerk, Kallakuri Vijay Ramarao, was found guilty of charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him”, the post added.
“According to the CBI, Ramarao had demanded a bribe of Rs 5 lakh from the company to settle a penalty notice issued to it for not filing PF returns from 2002”, the post added.
“After negotiations, the amount was brought down to Rs 3 lakh. The company representative then approached the CBI and lodged a complaint. The CBI laid a trap and caught Ramarao red-handed while accepting the bribe”, the post added.
“In its order, the special CBI court said that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and that Ramarao had abused his official position to demand and accept a bribe”, the post added.
“The court also observed that corruption by public servants undermines public trust in the government and that it is a serious crime that must be dealt with sternly”, the post added.
“The conviction of Ramarao is a welcome step in the fight against corruption in India. It sends a strong message that public servants who engage in corrupt practices will not be spared”, it concluded.
