Meta Faces Internal Revolt Over Hateful Conduct Policy Changes

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is facing significant backlash over recent changes to its Hateful Conduct policy.

The updated policy, announced by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, has sparked outrage among employees and advocacy groups, who argue that it undermines protections for marginalized communities and promotes hate speech.

Meta Policy Changes and Justifications

The new policy changes, which were introduced on January 7, 2025, aim to promote “free expression” by reducing restrictions on controversial topics, including gender identity and sexuality.

Under the updated guidelines, users are now allowed to refer to LGBTQ+ individuals as “mentally ill” and women as “household objects”.

Meta has justified these changes by stating that its previous rules had become too restrictive and prone to over-enforcement.

The policy changes have led to widespread dissatisfaction among Meta employees.

Internal discussions on the company’s Workplace platform reveal that many employees view the changes as “unacceptable” and “appalling”.

Some LGBTQ+ employees have taken time off to focus on their mental health, while others are considering resigning from the company.

Critics argue that the relaxed moderation could lead to an increase in hate speech across Meta’s platforms, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities.

Concerns from Advocacy Groups

LGBTQIA+ advocacy groups have also expressed alarm over the policy changes.

They argue that allowing derogatory speech against LGBTQ+ individuals contradicts scientific consensus and poses real-world safety concerns.

Lucinda Nelson, a social media researcher at the Queensland University of Technology, stated that marginalized people need more protection.

She emphasized that they need more protection, not less.

She criticized Meta’s decision, suggesting that it is an attempt to appeal to conservative audiences. This is especially relevant in light of the upcoming 2024 US elections.

The backlash against Meta’s policy changes has raised questions about the company’s commitment to its values.

Additionally, it has brought up concerns regarding the implications for marginalized groups.

Employees and analysts suspect that the policy shift is politically motivated.

They believe Zuckerberg aims to gain favor with conservative figures, including former President Donald Trump.

Despite Mark’s claims that the changes will attract new users, employees believe they could cause significant harm.
