OpenAI, Chat GPT firm sued for ‘stealing’ people’s data

OpenAI, a Chat GPT firm has been sued in the US. The allegation against the company is of stealing data from the public to train its AI chatbot ChatGPT. 

The lawsuit filing states, “Instead of following established procedures for the acquisition and usage of personal information, the defendants resorted to theft.”

Microsoft, an OpenAI partner also named in the suit, declined to comment. OpenAI did not immediately respond to CBS MoneyWatch’s request for comment. 

“They systematically scraped 300 billion words from the internet, including ‘books, articles, websites, and posts,’ which also included personal information obtained without consent”, the lawsuit added.

The lawsuit of the nearly 157-page lawsuit has been filed in the Northern District of California. The company’s allegation of violating the privacy and copyright policy.

There has been an allegation of “stolen data to train and develop” its products including ChatGPT 3.5, ChatGPT 4, DALL-E, and VALL-E.

According to CNN reports, Timothy K. Giordano, a partner at Clarkson, the law firm behind the suit, said in a statement, “By collecting previously obscure personal data of millions and misappropriating it to develop a volatile, untested technology, OpenAI put everyone in a zone of risk that is incalculable – but unacceptable by any measure of responsible data protection and use.”
