Tata Steel has announced its target to achieve 20% workforce diversity across the group by 2028.
The announcement coincides with the 10th anniversary of MOSAIC, the company’s flagship diversity and inclusion (D&I) initiative, and aligns with Pride Month celebrations.
The move underscores Tata Steel’s intent to redefine norms in traditionally male-dominated sectors like mining and manufacturing.
MOSAIC: The Engine Behind Inclusion at Tata Steel
Launched in 2015, MOSAIC is Tata Steel’s structured D&I framework, anchored in five strategic pillars:
- Recruitment
- Sensitisation
- Retention & Development
- Infrastructure
- Celebration
Over the past decade, MOSAIC has evolved from a policy framework into a lived experience across the organization.
It addresses the unique needs of women, persons with disabilities, the LGBTQIA+ community, and affirmative action groups, fostering a culture where every individual can thrive.
Progressive Policies: Beyond Compliance
Tata Steel’s D&I journey is marked by progressive HR policies that go beyond compliance:
- Equal benefits for LGBTQIA+ partners
- Gender-neutral parental leave
- Support for gender transition
- Inclusive relocation and travel benefits
The company created these policies to value individuals for who they are, not just what they do.
Milestones in Inclusion: Breaking Industry Stereotypes
Over the years, Tata Steel has launched several pioneering initiatives under MOSAIC:
- 2017: Women of Mettle scholarship to support women in engineering
- 2019: Women@Mines initiative to integrate women into mining operations
- 2021: Integration of transgender Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM) operators
- 2023: Ananta Quest for students with disabilities and onboarding of female firefighter trainees
- 2024: Operationalization of India’s first all-women mining shift at Noamundi
These efforts have helped shatter stereotypes and demonstrate that inclusion is not just a value—but a business imperative.
