The Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), under the Department of Space and part of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), has unveiled its External Student Internship initiative, inviting eligible candidates from across India and abroad to apply.

The programme is designed to support students in science and technology disciplines with real-world project experience.

Applications open from 1 August to 31 October, and students can apply twice a year, with a second window ending 31 March.

Eligibility and Application

This internship is open for students pursuing undergraduate, postgraduate, or PhD studies from recognised institutions, including those abroad, provided they are Indian citizens.

Applicants must show a minimum academic average of 60% or a CGPA of 6.32 on a 10-point scale.

Internships must be carried out in an offline mode under faculty supervision, subject to availability.

Structure of the Programme

IIRS provides two distinct paths:

  1. Internship Scheme — available to UG, PG, and PhD students (or those who graduated within six months). The minimum duration is 45 days.
  2. Student Project Trainee Scheme, targeted to specific degree levels:
    • BE/BTech: completion of sixth semester; minimum 45 days.
    • ME/MTech: completion of first semester; minimum 120 days.
    • BSc/Diploma: final-year students; minimum 45 days.
    • MSc: completion of first semester; minimum 120 days.
    • PhD: course work completed; minimum duration up to 30 months.

Regardless of the route, all applicants must meet the academic threshold of 60% or 6.32 CGPA.

Additional Guidelines

  • Only Indian nationals are eligible.
  • Applications are selected based on faculty availability, project relevance, academic record, and duration requested.
  • No stipend or financial support is offered by IIRS.
  • Accommodation within IIRS or ISRO facilities is not provided. In select centres, chargeable guest house or hostel options may be available.
  • Interns must present original academic documents, three passport-size photos, and valid ID proof upon joining.
  • Applications are accepted only via the online portal; there is no email or postal submission.
  • No extensions to the internship period are permitted.
  • Successful interns receive a certificate upon completion, based on their project report and its evaluation by the institute’s experts.
  • Applicants not selected are not formally informed.

Programme Outlook

The External Student Internship at IIRS offers a valuable platform to students keen to work in sectors like remote sensing, geospatial science, and environmental monitoring. While modest, the framework supports a meaningful connection to ISRO’s research ecosystem.

By hosting students in seasonal batches and aligning project work with faculty areas, the programme gives practical exposure without financial burden on the institutions involved. Certificates from IIRS also bolster student credentials in competitive academic and professional arenas.

How to Apply: As deadlines approach, prospective applicants should ensure they meet all requirements and apply through the official website during the active periods of 1 August to 31 October or after 31 March.
