OpenAI, the artificial intelligence research and deployment company behind ChatGPT, has officially announced plans to establish its first office in India.

The new office will be located in New Delhi and is expected to open later this year.

The move marks a significant milestone in OpenAI’s global expansion strategy and reflects the company’s growing focus on India, which has emerged as its second-largest market by user base.

The company has already registered a legal entity in India and begun hiring a local team.

This team will be tasked with strengthening relationships with government bodies, businesses, developers, and academic institutions, as well as supporting India-specific product development and policy engagement.

India’s Role in OpenAI’s Global Strategy

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized the strategic importance of India in a recent statement, “India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader—amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission.”

He added, “Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India”.

India’s rapid adoption of AI tools has made it a priority market for OpenAI.

Weekly active users of ChatGPT in India have increased more than fourfold in the past year, and the country now ranks among the top five developer markets globally.

India also has the largest population of student users on ChatGPT worldwide.

OpenAI Hiring and Local Engagement

OpenAI is actively hiring to build a multidisciplinary team that supports product development, engages in policy discussions, and leads community outreach.

The company currently has one India-based employee, Pragya Misra, who leads public policy and partnerships.

With the new office, OpenAI plans to significantly expand its local workforce to better serve the Indian market.

The team will work closely with the Indian government on the $1.2 billion IndiaAI Mission.

This initiative focuses on developing regionally tailored language models and advancing inclusive AI adoption across the country.

India-Focused Product Initiatives

In parallel with its expansion, OpenAI has launched several India-specific initiatives. These include:

  • ChatGPT Go: A new subscription plan priced at ₹399 per month, designed to offer affordable access to advanced AI features for Indian users.
  • OpenAI Academy: An AI literacy program developed in partnership with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
  • Enhanced Indic Language Support: Improvements in GPT-5 to better serve users across India’s diverse linguistic landscape.
  • Study Mode: A new feature aimed at helping students learn through guided, interactive engagement.
