Cognizant Faces Legal Challenge Over Logo Design in India

Cognizant Technology Solutions, the U.S.-based IT services giant, has removed its logo from all digital platforms in India following a Bombay High Court order reinstating a ban on its use.

The decision stems from an ongoing trademark infringement case filed by Bengaluru-based fintech firm Atyati Technologies, which alleges that Cognizant’s logo closely resembles its own design introduced in 2019.

The court’s ruling, dated August 26, 2025, reinstates a March 2024 injunction that temporarily barred Cognizant from using the disputed logo in India.

This reverses a June 2024 single-judge order that had allowed Cognizant to continue using the logo while the case remained pending.

Court Cites Need for Expedited Resolution

In its order, the Bombay High Court stated that the material presented by Cognizant did not conclusively prove that Atyati had suppressed information regarding its awareness of the alleged infringement.

The court directed that the March 19 injunction “shall continue to operate during pendency of the interim application” and urged the single judge to resolve the matter expeditiously.

As a result, Cognizant has removed its logo from major social media platforms including LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube, and X (formerly Twitter), and is currently displaying only its name across these channels in India.

Cognizant Responds to Legal Setback

In a public statement, Cognizant confirmed its compliance with the court’s directive while asserting its belief in the legality of its actions.

“We are complying with the Order of the Division Bench of the Bombay High Court. We are doing so while we consider our options for redress,” a company spokesperson said.

Cognizant added that it would pursue all available legal remedies to defend its rights. “We strongly believe that our actions have been lawful and appropriate, and we are confident that the legal process will affirm our position and deliver a just outcome,” the statement continued.

Supreme Court Sets Aside Ban, But Case Continues

In a subsequent development, the Supreme Court of India set aside the Bombay High Court’s Division Bench order, allowing Cognizant to resume use of its logo in India.

A bench led by Justices Dipankar Datta and R. Mahadevan restored the earlier single-judge order that had refused to continue the injunction.

The Supreme Court directed the Bombay High Court to dispose of the interim injunction application within six months.

Cognizant had filed a Special Leave Petition challenging the Division Bench’s decision, and the apex court’s ruling now permits the company to use its logo while the legal proceedings continue.

Atyati’s Allegations on Cognizant

Atyati Technologies, which provides digital solutions to financial institutions, claims that Cognizant’s logo infringes on its trademark and copyright protections.

The dispute highlights the growing importance of intellectual property enforcement in India’s technology sector, where branding and design play a critical role in market differentiation.

Legal experts note that while temporary injunctions are common in trademark disputes, the Cognizant-Atyati case underscores the need for swift judicial resolution to avoid prolonged uncertainty for both parties.
