In a significant development, the Maharashtra Labour Department has directed Ernst and Young (EY), Pune, to provide comprehensive details related to its work policies and employee welfare practices.
This move comes in the wake of the tragic death of Anna Sebastian, an EY employee who succumbed to work-related stress.
The department aims to investigate the circumstances surrounding her untimely demise and assess the company’s adherence to labor laws and employee well-being.
Background and Key Details Sought by the Labour Department
Anna Sebastian, an audit and assurance executive at EY, Pune, tragically lost her life. She died due to what appears to be an overwhelming workload and an exhausting schedule.
Her case has raised concerns about employee welfare and well-being. This is specially considering that Sebastian did not fit the traditional definition of a ‘laborer.’
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken note of the situation and is actively seeking answers.
The Maharashtra Labour Department has specifically requested the following information from EY:
Employee Welfare Policies: Details of the company’s policies related to employee welfare, including provisions for mental health support, work-life balance, and stress management.
Overtime Work: Information on EY’s practices regarding overtime work, including policies, compensation, and monitoring mechanisms.
Salary Structure: Transparency regarding salary structures, increments, and bonuses.
Operational Processes: Insights into EY’s operational processes, workload distribution, and measures to prevent excessive stress.
The Seven-Day Deadline to EY
EY has been given a tight deadline of seven days to compile and submit these crucial details.
The Labour Department aims to thoroughly examine the policies and practices that may have contributed to Anna Sebastian’s unfortunate fate.
The urgency reflects the seriousness with which the authorities are approaching this matter.
NHRC is recognizing the broader implications of this case. It has set up a dedicated group to investigate business and human rights.
Their focus extends beyond EY to all organizations, with the goal of safeguarding the health, well-being, and human rights of employees across the board.
The findings from this investigation will be shared with the Centre. On the basis of it appropriate action will be taken based on the report.
