Amazon has announced a major restructuring of its audio operations, resulting in the layoff of approximately 110 employees from its podcast studio Wondery.
The move, confirmed in early August 2025, is part of a broader effort to streamline the company’s audio content strategy and adapt to changing market dynamics.
The layoffs affect teams involved in narrative podcast production, with several roles being consolidated under Amazon’s Audible division.
The restructuring also includes the formation of a new unit called Creator Services, which will manage creator-led content and personality-driven talk shows.
Wondery CEO Steps Down as Amazon Consolidates Audio Units
As part of the shake-up, Jen Sargent, CEO of Wondery, has stepped down.
Her departure marks a turning point for the studio, which Amazon acquired in 2020 to bolster its original podcast offerings.
Marshall Lewy, Wondery’s head of content, is among the staff transitioning to Audible, Amazon’s Newark-based audio subsidiary.
Wondery, known for hit narrative podcasts like Dirty John, Dr. Death, and The Shrink Next Door, had recently secured high-profile deals with shows such as New Heights (hosted by NFL stars Travis and Jason Kelce) and Armchair Expert by Dax Shepard.
These shows will either be absorbed into Audible or managed by the new Creator Services team.
Industry Pressures and the Rise of Video Podcasts
Amazon’s decision comes amid growing competition in the podcast space, particularly from platforms like YouTube, which have gained traction with video-first formats.
The shift in consumer behavior has prompted audio-centric platforms to rethink their strategies for content discovery, monetization, and audience engagement.
Steve Boom, Amazon’s VP of Audio, Twitch, and Games, shared a memo addressing internal developments.
In it, he acknowledged the challenges emerging from the rapidly changing media landscape.
He emphasized that the restructuring aims to better position Amazon to serve creators, customers, and advertisers more effectively.
Impact on Employees and Future Direction
Affected employees have already been notified, and Amazon has stated that it will offer support during the transition.
While the Wondery brand will continue to exist, its operational footprint will be significantly reduced.
The company’s focus will now shift toward integrating storytelling content into Audible and developing creator-led initiatives under the new division.
The layoffs highlight a wider trend in the tech industry, with companies increasingly reevaluating their commitment to media and entertainment ventures.
Ongoing economic pressures and shifting audience behavior are driving this reassessment.
