The year 2023 is the year of Layoff. In the next round of layoffs soon upGrad, Google, and Atlassian will sack thousands of employees.

Atlassian Layoff

An Australian software company, Atlassian announces layoffs of 500 employees as a cost-cutting measure.

Co-founders billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar wrote to employees that the company has to rebalance the team to better position Atlassian for the long term.

The memo said, “Today marks a very hard day in our 20-year history. We have made the difficult decision to rebalance our team to better position Atlassian for the long term, meaning we will be saying goodbye to around 500 Atlassians, or 5% of our employees.”

“We’ve made hard calls to reduce our investment in specific areas, in order to reinvest in others,” the founders said.

“This is different from a financially-driven reduction, where you would look to make ‘broad-based cuts’ – for example, a 10 per cent cut equally distributed across every org within the company.

“This is not what is happening here. We want to be clear these decisions are not a reflection of our teammates’ work,” the company said.”

However, the teams across Atlassian are impacted, some of the most impacted teams include Talent Acquisition, Program Management, and Research & Insights.

The company has informed the impacted employees will have the option to interact with their teams until the end of the day Friday, Mar 10, 2023, local time. For people who have access to sensitive data, laptops will be locked, however, they will still be able to use Confluence, Slack, Zoom, and Gmail on other enrolled devices.

Google starts laying off employees in China

The layoffs will reset the salary standard and reduce operating costs while improving overall work efficiency. Recently, Google laid off 453 employees from various departments in India.

Recently in January, Google parent Alphabet announced the sack of 12,000 employees. The company CEO took responsibility for the layoffs.

UpGrad lays off 30 percent of the workforce

UpGrad has laid off around 30 percent of the workforce at one of its subsidiaries – Impartus Innovations. The reports stated that around 120 employees have been impacted.

Earlier in December, upGrad’s other subsidiary, Harappa, laid off nearly 30% of its total workforce, which included approximately 60 out of 200 employees.

So far in 2023, there have been 610 layoffs at tech companies with 163,358 people impacted (2,402 people per day). In 2022, there were 1,535 layoffs at tech companies 241,176 people were impacted.
