The Union Ministry of Labour and Employment recently released data that sheds light on the remarkable growth in ESI Scheme enrollments.

In August 2024, a staggering 20.74 lakh new workers joined the ESI Scheme.

This signified a significant expansion of social security coverage for employees across India.

Key Highlights of ESI Scheme

The provisional payroll data from the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) reveals that 20.74 lakh fresh employees were added to the ESI Scheme during August 2024.

This surge in enrollments underscores the importance of social security provisions for the workforce, especially during challenging times.

Across the country, 28,917 new establishments registered under the ESI Scheme in the same month.

These establishments span various sectors, including manufacturing, services, and construction.

It ensures that a diverse range of workers now benefit from the scheme.

Among the new registrants, a remarkable 9.89 lakh employees—approximately 47.68%—fall within the age group of up to 25 years.

This trend reflects the increasing employment opportunities for young individuals and their recognition of the need for social security.

The gender-wise analysis of the payroll data reveals that 4.14 lakh female employees joined the ESI Scheme in August 2024.

This emphasizes the scheme’s commitment to promoting gender inclusivity and safeguarding the health and well-being of women workers.

The ESI Scheme also welcomed 60 transgender employees during the same period.

This demonstrates the organization’s dedication to providing benefits to every section of society, regardless of gender identity.

Year-on-Year Growth

Comparing August 2024 with the same month in the previous year, we observe a robust growth rate of 6.80% in net registrations. Here’s a quick comparison:

August 2023: New employees registered: 19.42 lakh

August 2024: New employees registered: 20.74 lakh

The surge in ESI Scheme enrollments during August 2024 signifies a positive trend in social security coverage for workers.

As more establishments participate and more employees recognize the importance of such schemes, the ESI continues to play a crucial role in safeguarding the health and financial well-being of India’s workforce.
