Air India Express crew ends strike after Labour Office mediation

The cabin crew of Air India Express called off their strike on Thursday, the airline will reinstate 25 cabin crew who were terminated for reporting sick since May 6. Following mediation by the Chief Labour Commissioner, the flight crew agreed to resume duty, resolving the dispute temporarily.

Amid ongoing flight cancellations and crisis management efforts, Air India Express recently announced the termination of contracts for senior cabin crew members who reported sick, as conveyed in a recent statement by the Tata group-owned carrier.

The Chief Labour Commissioner (CLC) initiated a conciliation meeting due to over 200 cabin crew reporting sick from May 6, causing flight disruptions at Air India Express.

Airline management assured resolution of cabin crew’s concerns regarding discrimination from the AirAsia India merger and allowance removal. The Chief Labour Commissioner will hold another meeting on May 28 to address these issues.

On the third day of the protest on “sick leave” Air India Express canceled 85 flights. Air India, another Tata Group airline, is supported by operating flights on 20 routes, as stated in a media release by Air India Express.

In a letter sent late on May 8 to a cabin crew member regarding immediate termination, Air India Express stated, “Reporting sick for work constitutes concerted action to disrupt company services, violating laws and service rules.”

Air India Express cabin crew express dissatisfaction over perceived preferential treatment towards former AirAsia India employees, leading to unequal postings.

They protest unfair contractual terms, with Air India Express offering one or five-year employment compared to AirAsia India’s employment till age 58. They also lament the removal of allowances.

Tata Sons’ 2022 merger of Air India and Vistara, alongside Air India Express and AirAsia India, sparked dissatisfaction among employees. The consolidation stirred concerns and discontent within the workforce of the merged entities.
