In a significant turn of events, Samsung India’s workers have decided to call off their over a month-long strike at the company’s plant near Chennai.

The strike, which began on September 9, had put the spotlight on issues related to wage revisions, work conditions, and the recognition of the newly-formed Samsung India Workers Union

After extensive discussions and government-mediated talks, a resolution was reached, leading to the end of the 37-day strike.

Samsung Workers’ Strike: Background, Resolution and Welfare Measures

The strike had affected operations at the Tamil Nadu-based plant, where approximately 1,100 workers out of a total of 1,750 employees participated in the industrial action.

Their demands included fair wages, improved working conditions, and formal recognition of their union. The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) supported the striking workers throughout the duration of the protest.

Following conciliation talks between the company’s management and the workers, both parties agreed to end the strike.

The Tamil Nadu Labour Welfare Department confirmed this decision, emphasizing that it was in the best interest of all stakeholders.

As part of the resolution, Samsung management announced several welfare measures aimed at improving the workers’ conditions.

Wrapping Up!

The strike lasted for 37 days, during which negotiations took place at various stages. Samsung India welcomed the decision by CITU to call off the strike.

The company assured that no disciplinary action would be taken against workers who participated in the strike. The management committed to working closely with employees to enhance the work environment at the Chennai factory.

While the company accepted most of the workers’ demands, the matter of recognizing the workers’ union remained unresolved.
