Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has expanded its efforts under the Skill India Mission (SIM) to impart future skills such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Robotics, and other emerging technologies.
Through a network of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs), and digital platforms, the ministry is delivering skill, re-skill, and up-skill programs across diverse sectors.
The initiative is being implemented through flagship schemes including Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS), National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS), and the Craftsman Training Scheme (CTS).
PMKVY 4.0 by MSDE Introduces Dedicated Future Skills Job Roles
Under PMKVY 4.0, MSDE has introduced a dedicated “Future Skills” category aimed at preparing youth for opportunities in AI, ML, and digital marketing.
Over the past three years, 409,905 candidates have been trained across 98 job roles, reflecting a strong demand for tech-enabled competencies.
In parallel, apprenticeship training under NAPS now includes AI and Robotics trades, with 4,207 apprentices engaged in eight specialized trades nationwide.
ITIs and NSTIs Offer 31 New-Age Courses
The Directorate General of Training (DGT) has rolled out 31 new-age courses under CTS in ITIs and NSTIs, covering areas such as Mechatronics, Internet of Things (IoT), Cybersecurity, and Semiconductors.
These courses have attracted 59,327 enrolments over the last three years, underscoring growing interest in digital and automation technologies.
To further enhance training quality, DGT has signed MoUs with leading tech firms including IBM, CISCO, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Microsoft, enabling access to cutting-edge curricula in Big Data Analytics, Blockchain, and Cloud Computing.
AI Programming Assistant and Micro-Credential Courses Launched
In a bid to deepen AI literacy, DGT has introduced a specialized course titled ‘Artificial Intelligence Programming Assistant (AIPA)’.
Additionally, a 7.5-hour micro-credential course, “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence,” has been developed for CTS trainees in collaboration with industry and academic experts.
These offerings provide foundational and applied knowledge in AI and equip trainees to meet industry expectations.
Skill India Digital Hub (SIDH) Expands Access to AI Learning
The launch of the Skill India Digital Hub (SIDH) marks a significant step in democratizing access to future skills.
The platform provides a diverse selection of courses in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML).
Learners can begin with introductory modules such as Fundamentals of Azure AI Speech.
For advanced learners, the platform offers specialized programs like Google Cloud Generative AI.
Another high-level course includes AI Strategy for Healthcare, tailored to industry-specific applications.
SIDH also supports job matching and entrepreneurship, making it a comprehensive skilling ecosystem.
International Collaborations by MSDE and Mobility Initiatives
MSDE has signed MoUs and MoCs with eight countries—including Australia, Japan, Germany, and France—to promote Vocational Education and Training (VET) and facilitate skilled labor mobility.
These agreements enable mutual recognition of qualifications, technical exchanges, and joint training programs.
To support overseas employment, the Ministry has set up Skill India International Centres, known as SIICs.
These centres assist individuals who seek job opportunities abroad.
Their objective is to create a ‘Trusted Workforce Supply Chain’ that facilitates skilled migration.
The approach emphasizes fairness, transparency, and reliability in connecting talent with global markets.
Infrastructure Modernization and Industry 4.0 Alignment by MSDE
MSDE is upgrading training facilities to match the demands of Industry 4.0.
As part of this initiative, Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and other training centers are being modernized.
The focus areas include cutting-edge sectors such as Semiconductors, Solar Energy, and Drones.
Other domains receiving special attention are Electric Vehicles and Automation.
India is preparing its workforce to meet future technological advancements through these efforts.
Special projects and short-term training programs are being integrated with SIDH for modular learning.
The Cabinet has approved the National Scheme for Upgradation of ITIs and the creation of National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs).
This hub-and-spoke model will upgrade 1,000 ITIs, introduce industry-aligned curricula, and offer new courses in AI, robotics, and climate-friendly technologies.
Global Recognition and G20 Endorsement
At the G20 summit, India’s leadership in skill development received international recognition.
This acknowledgment was reflected in the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration.
The declaration featured a commitment to create an international reference classification of occupations.
This framework will be based on specific skill sets and qualification standards. Its aim is to enhance comparability and global recognition of professional competencies.
The International Labour Organization (ILO) will lead this initiative, enhancing global comparability and recognition of Indian talent.
