HUL brings a policy to protect its staff from domestic abuse

According to the TOI report, FMCG major Hindustan Unilever (HUL) has taken a major step towards employees’ well-being and helping them from domestic abuse.

In a first for Inda Inc, the company has developed a policy to protect its employees from domestic abuse. It is significant as this new policy extends the responsibility of a company towards employees’ well-being beyond the office and into the employee’s personal and home life.

HUL’s new policy comes at a time when a notable number of its employees are working from home. The HUL policy aims to protect and provide relief to staff members who are survivors of abuse, or acts of emotional and physical abuse beyond the office.

Anuradha Razdan, HUL Inda Head HR, said, “We want to stand up as advocates for change that we would like to see in society by proactively coming up with a policy which calls out to our employees: ‘If you are someone who has faced this and wants to come out and talk, the organization is here to support you.”

According to reports, during the COVID-19 induced lockdowns, cases of domestic violence are increased. The complaints received by the National Commission for Women (NCW) related to domestic abuse against women doubled in the first month of the lockdown. The number of complaints went from 123 between February 17-March 22 to 250 between March 23-April 22.

Recently, HUL has also launched mental well-being initiatives for blue-collar workforce and their families to address issues around physical and mental well-being. It covers 11,000 shop floor workers and around 30,000 indirect workers.

In addition to this, the entire factory leadership team keeps regular connection with the workers and their families. On a weekly basis, members from the leadership team connect with every employee.
