Woman sacked for being pregnant awarded Rs 15 Lakh compensation

During the period of pregnancy, many female employees lose their jobs. As per the recent Telegraph report, a 34-year-old woman, Charlotte Leitch had only recently joined Essex-based CIS services firm but only a couple of weeks later her employer fired her.

She won compensation of nearly Rs. 15 lahks after she was fired for “being pregnant“. according to The Telegraph.

Final Decision

The judge concluded that considering all the circumstances the primary reason for sacking Ms. Leitch’s pregnancy and her pregnancy-related illness in the past. Due to the unfair dismissal, UK woman Charlotte Leitch has been awarded £14,885 (₹ 15 Lakh compensation) after being decided that she was fired for reasons connected to her pregnancy.

Case Background

Charlotte Leitch lost her job as she reported to her manager that she was pregnant. As per the reports, she told her manager that she had experienced several miscarriages in the past. 

Although, the woman’s reporting manager was also a mother despite the that had served handed over the termination letter to Charlotte Leitch.

As per news18 reports, Charlotte wrote an email to Nicola and company director Chris Clark that read, “This has made me feel uncomfortable, created immediate financial stress additional to being made to feel that I and my baby are insignificant to the company.

“‘I am extremely disheartened that I have been treated this way and the trust and support which was expected from HR, or the director was not offered”, the email added.

In response, the company said, “The decision to terminate your employment was made irrespective of you being pregnant and we categorically deny that we have discriminated against you.”
