Air India commitment to growth is evident in its hiring strategy. Over the last two years, the airline has brought onboard a staggering 9,000 employees.

Among them are 5,000 crew members, reinforcing the airline’s operational capacity and service excellence. This surge in recruitment aligns with Air India’s ambitious five-year transformation plan, aptly named “Vihaan.AI” .

Market Share and Revenue

The impact of this hiring spree is evident in Air India’s market share. In the domestic market, the airline’s slice of the pie has grown from 24% in FY23 to an impressive 27% in FY24.

Internationally, Air India’s market share rose from 21% to 24% during the same period. These gains can be attributed to network expansion and service enhancements .

Air India’s financial health has also seen positive shifts. Operating revenues surged by 25%, signaling a robust financial performance. Even more striking is the reduction in losses—over 50% in the last financial year.

Considering that these results cover only the early stages of the transformation program, it’s clear that the airline’s efforts are bearing fruit.

Campbell Wilson, CEO and MD of Air India shared his perspective on the achievement.

He said “When we consider that the FY in question covered only the early part of our transformation program, before most of the initiatives we have been working on were implemented, these early results should encourage us that the effort is bearing fruit.”

“Work has of course continued apace in the six months since the FY ended, and the strong momentum has continued…” Campbell added.

Air India: Workforce Demographics and Fleet Upgrades

Campbell Wilson emphasized the rejuvenation of Air India’s workforce. The average age of employees has dropped significantly—from 54 years to 35 years—reflecting a more youthful and dynamic team.

This infusion of fresh talent contributes to the airline’s agility and adaptability.

Air India isn’t just hiring; it’s also investing in its existing fleet. The carrier has initiated the refurbishment of 67 narrow-body aircraft, introducing new cabin configurations and seats.

With a planned retrofit rate of three to four aircraft per month, the entire narrow-body fleet is expected to be upgraded by mid-2025.

Additionally, the airline has its sights set on retrofitting its legacy 787 and 777 aircraft once the selected seats are certified and delivered.

New Routes and Destinations

Air India’s expansion isn’t limited to its workforce and fleet. The airline has launched an impressive 35 new routes—10 domestic and 25 international.

Additionally, it has introduced 11 new destinations—2 domestic and 9 overseas. These strategic moves position Air India as a formidable player in the global aviation industry.

From financial resilience to operational agility, Air India’s journey over the past two years is a testament to its commitment to excellence.

As the airline continues to soar, passengers can expect improved services, enhanced connectivity, and a brighter future for this iconic carrier.
