In a year marked by economic shifts and organizational recalibrations, Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) witnessed significant changes in its workforce.

Let’s understand the details of RIL’s headcount fluctuations, strategies to counter attrition, and the demographic composition of its employees.

Workforce Reduction and Voluntary Separations

Headcount Decline: Mukesh Ambani-led RIL experienced a workforce reduction of 42,052 employees in FY24. This nearly 11% decrease brought the total headcount down to 347,362 from the previous year’s 389,414.

Voluntary Separations: Interestingly, despite the reduction, RIL reported that “overall voluntary separations” (resignations) in FY24 were lower than in FY23.

Reliance Retail Impact: Reliance Retail alone accounted for 38,029 of the 42,052 fewer employees. The retail sector faced challenges due to store closures and a slower expansion rate.

Strategies to Counter Attrition: The report highlighted that the retail and telecom businesses were exploring different strategies to mitigate attrition. One of the key challenges faced by the retail arm was “access to trained manpower to support growth.”

Reliance Industries: Commission-Based Roles and Hiring Trends

Attrition Breakdown: For Jio, 43% of reported attrition included non-regular employees—those on fixed-term contracts, part-timers, apprentices, and interns.

Shift to Commission-Based Roles: Jio’s workforce witnessed a shift toward commission-based job roles, which reduced the overall need for new hiring in field jobs.

Scaling Up: RIL hired 1.71 lakh new employees across diverse businesses during the year, expanding its direct workforce to nearly 3.48 lakh.

Youthful Workforce: More than half of RIL’s workforce was below 30 years of age—a trend seen across Indian businesses.

Gender Representation: Among the recruits, 81.8% were below 30, and 24.0% were women. Of those who voluntarily left, 74.9% were below 30, and 22.7% were women.
