Royal Enfield, one of India’s leading motorcycle manufacturers, is making a bold move toward gender inclusivity by transforming its Cheyyar plant in Tamil Nadu into an all-women facility.
This initiative aligns with the company’s commitment to increasing gender diversity in the automotive sector, a traditionally male-dominated industry.
The announcement was made by B. Govindarajan, CEO of Royal Enfield and MD of Eicher Motors, who emphasized the company’s progress in gender diversity and its goal of making employment in the automotive industry more accessible to women.
Royal Enfield Gender Diversity Journey
A few years ago, Royal Enfield’s gender diversity ratio was just 5%, highlighting a significant gap in workforce representation.
Since then, the company has made remarkable progress, increasing diversity to 20% across its workforce.
In FY25 alone, 24% of new hires were women, surpassing the company’s annual diversity target.
Royal Enfield has already set up its first all-women assembly line at the Cheyyar plant, marking a significant step toward gender inclusivity.
Now, the company is working to transition the entire facility into a 100% female-operated workforce, reinforcing its commitment to diversity in manufacturing.
Cheyyar Plant’s Role in the Initiative
The Cheyyar plant is set to become Royal Enfield’s first manufacturing facility entirely operated by women, marking a historic shift in the company’s workforce strategy.
The move will:
- Empower women in manufacturing roles, providing them with greater career opportunities.
- Enhance workplace inclusivity, setting a precedent for other automotive companies.
- Improve operational efficiency, as studies suggest diverse teams contribute to better problem-solving and innovation.
Govindarajan stated, “We’re not stopping at the all-women assembly line. We’re now working towards making Cheyyar Royal Enfield’s first all-women plant, with a 100% female workforce.”.
Expanding Gender Diversity Beyond Cheyyar
Royal Enfield’s commitment to gender inclusivity extends beyond the Cheyyar facility.
The company’s Vallam plant, also in Tamil Nadu, now has the highest number of women employees at any single Royal Enfield facility, accounting for 26% of the workforce.
The broader automotive industry is also witnessing a shift toward gender diversity.
JSW MG Motor India has been actively promoting gender diversity, making strides in increasing female representation.
As a result, women now make up over 31% of its workforce, reflecting the company’s commitment to inclusivity.
