In a significant development, the newly recognized Samsung employees’ trade union is set to hold talks with the company management regarding wage revision and better working conditions.

This comes after the Tamil Nadu labour department registered the union, following a directive from the Madras High Court.

The union, known as Samsung India Thozhilalar Sangam, represents around 1,400 employees at the Chennai plant.

The registration follows months of unrest and a 37-day strike that began on September 9, 2024.

The strike, which severely impacted production at the electronics manufacturing facility, was part of the workers’ demands for union recognition, improved wages, and better working conditions.

Samsung Workers’ Union: Key Demands and Tripartite Talks

The union’s key demands include a pay hike to Rs 36,000 over three years, bonuses, insurance benefits, leave, reducing working hours from 8.40 hours to a five-day work week, and other benefits.

These demands reflect the workers’ desire for better compensation and work-life balance.

The union members will hold tripartite talks with company representatives and labour department officials on January 30, 2025.

The discussions aim to address the workers’ demands and find a mutually agreeable solution.

Union’s Perspective and Management’s Response

A Soundararajan, the state president of the Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU), emphasized the importance of these talks.

“Our demands are pay hike, bonus, insurance benefits, leave, reducing the working hours and a five-day work week,” he said.

He also highlighted that the union’s registration is a victory for workers’ rights and unionism in India.

Samsung has not yet publicly commented on the upcoming talks.

However, seeing the company’s willingness to engage in discussions is a positive step towards resolving the issues raised by the union.
