One of Ireland’s largest employers in software development, Ericsson has announced that it is planning to hire 250 people at its Irish Research and Development Centre in Athlone.
- The company will add 250 roles over the next three years with a focus on cloud-native software developers, engineers, and architects at all career stages.
- The highly-skilled roles, include opportunities for software developers, data scientists, architects, and cloud and mobile communication engineers at all career stages.
- This project is supported by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland.
- More than 40% of the world’s mobile traffic passes through networks delivered by Ericsson and it manages networks that together serve over 1 billion subscribers.
- Ericsson Ireland has grown 25% over the past five years, currently employing 1200 at its Athlone Research and Development Centre (1400 across Ireland).
- Ericsson had its presence in Athlone since 1979 which is for more than 40 years and its software development campus is one of Ireland’s largest.
- The Athlone is the global R&D headquarters of Ericsson Digital Services OSS (Operations Support Systems).
Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade & Employment, Leo Varadkar TD said, “This is really great news. Ericsson is expanding further, adding 250 new jobs to 1400 the company already employs here. These new jobs are in new areas in cloud-native technologies, providing some really exciting opportunities for the Midlands.”

These highly skilled roles in software development, engineering, and cloud technologies are a very welcome development for the region and this expansion reaffirms the Midlands as a centre of excellence in the ICT sector and cloud technology.”

The company currently employs 1200 people developing its OSS and Cloud RAN (Radio Access Network) portfolio. Ericsson employs an additional 200 at its Dublin base.
