Mumbai-based influencer marketing and talent management firm Monk Entertainment (Monk-E) has announced a full-time job opening for what it calls “professional doomscrollers.”

The role, which requires candidates to spend at least six hours a day analyzing social media content, is designed to tap into the growing demand for trend-spotting and content curation in the creator economy.

Viraj Sheth, co-founder and CEO of Monk Entertainment, shared the job listing on Instagram and LinkedIn, inviting applications from individuals who are deeply immersed in platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and Reddit.

The announcement has sparked widespread interest and debate online, with many users expressing surprise that a habit once considered unproductive is now being recognized as a marketable skill.

What the Role Entails

The position is based in Mumbai and is full-time, with expectations that the selected candidate will spend a minimum of six hours daily scrolling through Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and other social media formats.

But this isn’t about passive consumption.

The ideal candidate is expected to:

  • Track emerging creators and viral trends
  • Analyze reel formats, meme movements, and content styles
  • Monitor Reddit communities such as InstaCelebsGossip for early signals
  • Present insights backed by screenshots of screen time and content engagement
  • Be fluent in both English and Hindi
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Excel for organizing and reporting findings

Applicants are encouraged to apply with a humorous tone, and Viraj has explicitly requested that candidates avoid using ChatGPT to draft their cover letters.

While the salary has not been disclosed, Viraj has described it as “very competitive”.

From Habit to Profession at Monk Entertainment: Reframing Doomscrolling

Traditionally, doomscrolling refers to the compulsive consumption of negative or anxiety-inducing content online.

However, Monk Entertainment is redefining the term to reflect a more purposeful engagement with digital platforms.

In this context, doomscrollers are individuals who can identify patterns, predict trends, and understand the nuances of online culture.

“This isn’t just mindless scrolling,” Viraj told India Today.

“The ideal candidate notices what others miss—trends, viral creators, popular reel formats, and how memes travel. They scroll with curiosity, context, and the ability to predict patterns”.

The role is part of Monk-E’s broader strategy to strengthen its influencer marketing and content production capabilities by hiring individuals who live and breathe digital culture.

Social Media Reacts: Amusement, Envy, and Curiosity

The job listing has generated a wave of reactions across social media.

Some users joked about being “overqualified” due to their extensive screen time, while others expressed genuine interest in turning their digital habits into a career.

Comments ranged from “Is 19 hours ok, or am I overqualified?” to “Finally someone is paying for long screen time hours!”

Some skeptics questioned the seriousness of the role. However, most responses reflected a growing acceptance of unconventional career paths in the digital age.

The listing highlights a shift in Gen Z and millennial job markets. Increasingly, roles are valuing lived experience in online spaces over traditional qualifications.
