Vedanta Aluminium, the country’s largest aluminium producer, has announced plans to hire 15 transgender employees in 2026.

This initiative, unveiled during Pride Month 2025, will raise the company’s total transgender workforce to 44 employees across its operations in Jharsuguda, Odisha, and Korba, Chhattisgarh.

The announcement is part of Vedanta’s broader strategy to embed diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) into its core operations, setting a precedent for the traditionally male-dominated manufacturing industry.

Comprehensive Support Framework for Transgender Employees

Vedanta Aluminium has introduced a robust framework of progressive policies to ensure the well-being, dignity, and career growth of transgender employees.

These include:

  • Sensitization workshops to build awareness and foster a respectful workplace culture
  • Financial and leave assistance for gender reaffirmation surgery
  • Statutory benefits, such as higher education allowances
  • Access to laser hair removal machines for those undergoing transition
  • Gender-neutral infrastructure at its smelters and offices

Employees undergoing gender reaffirmation are entitled to 30 days of paid leave and a ₹2 lakh compensation package to support their medical journey.

Vedanta Aluminium: Empowering Through Policy and Practice

The company’s inclusive policies are already making a tangible impact.

Six transgender employees at Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO) in Korba have already availed of gender reaffirmation benefits.

Additionally, two others have applied for higher education support under the company’s inclusive policies.

These policies are designed not just to hire, but to empower individuals to grow into leadership roles within the organization.

Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, emphasized the strategic importance of this initiative, “Inclusivity is not just the right thing to do—it is a strategic imperative. A diverse workforce fosters fresh perspectives, fuels innovation, and strengthens resilience.”

He added, “By empowering transgender individuals with supportive policies and equal opportunities, we are setting a benchmark for inclusive growth within Indian manufacturing.”
