An American multinational technology company, Amazon has postponed the joining of new hires from India’s prestigious colleges including Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs).

According to Business Today, the Offer letters of NIT students have also been deferred and some have also been revoked it. The impacted graduate from IIT expressed concerns over waiting for such long periods.

Additionally, it is also creating concerns by prompting them to actively seek alternative job opportunities to avoid potential negative implications on their professional profile.

The reports also stated that an IIT Bombay graduate hired as Software Development Engineer said, “I was recruited at Amazon at SDE-1 with a CTC of around 30 lpa.”

“I was supposed to join in June, but I got an email from HR saying that the offer has been deferred. My next joining is set in January”, he added.

He further said, “This is across IITs. I know several other people from other campuses who had interned with me, even their offer letters have been deferred.”

However, SightsinPlus could not independently verify the claim. Recently, Amazon was also laying off about 500 employees in India.

These layoffs in Amazon India were across different businesses and functions including Amazon Web Services (AWS), human resources, and support functions.

Additionally, Some of Amazon’s onboarding functions in tier-2 cities such as Kochi and Lucknow have also been shut down as a part of the restructuring.

Earlier, CEO Andy Jassy said, “Someone may ask why we didn’t announce these 9,000 role reductions with the ones we announced a couple of months ago.”

“As our internal businesses evaluated what customers most care about, they made re-prioritization decisions that sometimes led to role reductions, sometimes led to moving people from one initiative to another, and sometimes led to new openings where we don’t have the right skills match from our existing team members”, he said.

He further added, “This initially led us to eliminate 18,000 positions (which we shared in January); and, as we completed the second phase of our planning this month, it led us to these additional 9,000 role reductions (though you will see limited hiring in some of our businesses in strategic areas where we’ve prioritized allocating more resources).”

Earlier, Amazon was shutting down its three businesses in India. Firstly, wholesale distribution business in India. This is part of the annual operating planning review process and cost-cutting measures.

Secondly, The company announced that the company will shut down its food-delivery business in India on December 29 this year. This was launched in India in May 2020 in parts of Bengaluru.

Followed by the closure of the Amazon Academy platform was a platform that provided coaching for competitive exams including Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), which allows entry into top engineering colleges across India
