The year 2023 started on a Layoff note. In January 2023 alone 107,780 employees were sacked from various companies.

However, in February 2023 the number has reduced to 47,533 impacted employees from various companies. The following companies laid off employees in February 2023:

  • Ericsson to sack 8,500 employees. This is one of the largest layoffs in the industry.
  • KPMG sacked 700 employees due to the economic slowdown of nearly 2 percent of its workforce in the United States.
  • Disney laid off 7,000 employees to make the business more profitable. The layoffs represent an estimated 3.6% of the company’s global workforce.
  • Zoom has announced to sack 1300 employees or roughly 15 percent of the company’s workforce.
  • Infosys has fired 600 freshers after they fail an internal assessment test.
  • Dell sacked about 6,500 employees which are about 5 percent of its global workforce.

Apart from this, companies have also sacked employees based on performance. Uber sacked employees on the ground of a ‘more rigorous approach’ to performance reviews.

However, Uber is not using the term “layoff” to describe the recent terminations and has stated that it will fill the affected roles with new hires.

Recently, Meta (formerly named Facebook) has given poor performance reviews to around 7,000 employees. The company has marked the employees as “subpar” in recent performance reviews.

The parent firm of Facebook and Instagram also got rid of a bonus metric. However, the reports also suggested that the performance system may even signify that poor performance reviews may lead to Meta layoffs.

In 2023, there have been 559 layoffs at tech companies with 156,257 people impacted (2,562 people per day). In 2022, there were 1,535 layoffs at tech companies 241,176 people were impacted.

Tech companies have either frozen the hiring process or laid off many employees. The major companies that laid off employees include Infosys, Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Byju’s, Wipro, and Salesforce laid off a maximum number of workers globally.

Earlier in November, Amazon announced that will be layoff 10,000 employees. However, the company further added 8,000 employees, and the total layoffs were announced as 18,000 employees. On the other hand, Google sacked roughly 12,000 staff. Microsoft and Salesforce laid off 10,000 and 7,000, respectively.
