PM Internship Scheme (PMIS) 2025 has expanded significantly, offering over 1.19 lakh internship opportunities across 327 companies in India.

Launched in 2024 by the Central Government, the scheme aims to equip young professionals aged 21–24 with industry-relevant skills through structured training programs.

The initiative has gained momentum, with top-tier companies and MSMEs participating to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world employment.

PM Internship Scheme: Structure and Eligibility

The PM Internship Scheme 2025 is designed to provide hands-on training in various industries, ensuring that interns gain practical experience before entering the workforce.

The program includes:

  • Six months of classroom training followed by six months of on-the-job field training.
  • A monthly stipend of ₹5,000, along with a one-time joining grant of ₹6,000.
  • Internships available across 25 sectors, including Oil & Natural Gas, Tourism & Hospitality, and Banking & Financial Services.
  • Eligibility criteria: Candidates must have completed Class 10, Intermediate, ITI, Diploma, or Degree and belong to families with an annual income of less than ₹8 lakh.

Expansion and Industry Participation

The scheme has seen rapid expansion, with the number of participating companies increasing from 280 in Round 1 to 327 in Round 2.

Internships are now available in 735 districts across 36 states and union territories. The highest number of applications have come from:

  • Maharashtra
  • Tamil Nadu
  • Gujarat
  • Karnataka

These states account for nearly 50,000 applications, reflecting strong interest among young professionals.

Insights from the First Round of PM Internship Scheme

The pilot phase, launched in October 2024, offered 1.27 lakh internships, attracting 6.21 lakh applicants.

Out of these, 82,077 candidates were selected, with 28,141 joining training programs. The highest number of interns came from:

  • Uttar Pradesh – 4,656 interns
  • Bihar – 2,418 interns
  • Andhra Pradesh – 1,970 interns
  • Telangana – 1,380 interns

Interestingly, apart from graduates, a large number of Class 10 pass-outs applied for internships in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Telangana.

In Andhra Pradesh, ITI-qualified candidates dominated the applicant pool.

Government’s Vision and Future Plans

The PM Internship Scheme is part of a broader national mission to provide one crore internships over five years, making it one of India’s largest skilling initiatives.

The government is working on revamping the scheme for FY26, focusing on:

  • Improving implementation efficiency.
  • Expanding reach across educational and industry sectors.
  • Enhancing financial incentives for interns.

The Ministry of Corporate Affairs is also considering policy tweaks based on insights from the pilot rounds, ensuring that the scheme aligns with industry needs and student expectations.
