India’s ambitious National Green Hydrogen Mission is poised to generate an estimated six lakh jobs by 2030, according to recent statements by Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy, Shripad Yesso Naik.

The mission, launched in January 2023 with a financial outlay of ₹19,744 crore, aims to position India as a global hub for green hydrogen production, innovation, and export.

The initiative is part of India’s broader strategy to reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports, meet its net-zero emissions target by 2070, and create high-value employment opportunities in clean energy sectors.

₹8 Lakh Crore Investment Expected in Green Hydrogen Ecosystem

Industry stakeholders expect the green hydrogen sector to attract over ₹8 lakh crore in investments by 2030.

These funds will support infrastructure development, electrolyser manufacturing, hydrogen production facilities, and research and development (R&D) efforts.

The government has already awarded 3,000 MW of electrolyser manufacturing capacity to 15 companies and sanctioned 8.62 lakh tonnes per annum of hydrogen production capacity to 19 firms.

Industry leaders and policymakers project that the scale of investment and industrial activity will create six lakh direct and indirect jobs across engineering, manufacturing, logistics, research, and operations.

R&D and Innovation at the Core of the Jobs Mission

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has backed over 200 R&D projects in renewable energy, hydrogen, fuel cells, and storage technologies.

Minister Naik emphasized the importance of translating research into commercial solutions, noting that testing facilities and incubation programs have been established to support innovators.

“The journey from research to commercialization requires patience, perseverance, and precision,” Naik said at the FICCI Green Hydrogen Summit.

“With the ecosystem we are building, I am confident that India will not only meet these challenges but transform them into opportunities”.

State-Level Policies and Hydrogen Hubs for Jobs

Fifteen Indian states have notified their own hydrogen policies, facilitating land allocation, water access, and renewable energy storage.

These policies aim to create enabling ecosystems and hydrogen hubs that support industrial growth and innovation.

States such as Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra are leading efforts to develop dedicated hydrogen zones.

They are offering incentives to support infrastructure growth and skill development in the sector.

Strategic Impact on Energy Security and Exports

The mission will reduce fossil fuel imports by ₹1 lakh crore cumulatively by 2030.

Green hydrogen has the potential to decarbonize sectors such as steel, shipping, fertilizers, and mobility.

This transition can make Indian industries more competitive in a carbon-regulated global economy.

India also aims to become a key exporter of green hydrogen and its derivatives.

It plans to leverage its renewable energy capacity, which reached 237 GW as of June 2025, to support this goal.

This includes 119 GW of solar, 52 GW of wind, and 49 GW from large hydro sources.
