Layoffs continue in 2024, Google sacks hundreds of employees

According to Reuters, an American multinational technology company, Google said on Wednesday that the company is laying off hundreds of employees working in Assistant, hardware, and engineering teams.

A spokesperson told Reuters in a statement, “Throughout second-half of 2023, a number of our teams made changes to become more efficient and work better, and to align their resources to their biggest product priorities.”

“Some teams are continuing to make these kinds of organizational changes, which include some role eliminations globally”, a spokesperson added. ​

The layoffs may impact employees from the company’s Devices and Services team, with the majority in the 1P AR hardware team. However, the company of employees has not been specified by the company.

According to earlier media reports, Tech major, Google’s advancement in artificial intelligence may result in restructuring the ad sales department, which may impact employees from the ad sales unit at Google.

As a result, the company plans to automate certain jobs in the ad sales and customer service department. As of September 2023, Alphabet had 182,381 employees across the world. ​

Recently, as per various media reports, BlackRock will sack nearly 600 employees, or 3% of its global workforce.

Chief Executive Officer Larry Fink and President Rob Kapito said, “We see our industry changing faster than at any time since the founding of BlackRock.”

“And, perhaps most profound, new technologies are poised to transform our industry – and every other industry,” they added.

The company had a workforce strength of 19,800 at the end of December 2022. On the other hand, Amazon.com streaming unit Twitch will sack 35% or about 500 employees. The layoffs will impact the employees as the business remains unprofitable nine years after Amazon acquires the company.
