Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s largest IT services firm, has publicly rejected allegations made in a viral Reddit post that claimed a long-serving employee was forced into early retirement without severance pay or compensation.
The post, shared under the username “silver_traveller,” described how the employee—allegedly with nearly 30 years of service—was given just 20 minutes to choose between resignation and termination during a meeting in June 2025.
The user claimed that TCS abruptly asked their 50-year-old brother, who had been loyal to the company for three decades, to retire without providing any financial support despite his long tenure.
The post quickly gained traction, drawing over 700 upvotes and sparking widespread discussion about labor practices in India’s IT sector.
TCS Responds: “Absolutely Incorrect and False”
In response to media inquiries, TCS dismissed the allegations as baseless.
“The misinformation quoted by an anonymous user on Reddit, which is the source of your article, is absolutely incorrect and false,” the company stated.
TCS emphasized that the claims do not reflect its policies or practices and that the company remains committed to fair treatment of its employees.
The company’s rebuttal comes amid heightened scrutiny following its announcement to lay off approximately 2% of its global workforce—roughly 12,000 employees—in 2025.
While TCS has confirmed that affected employees are being provided severance packages and compensation in line with industry norms, the Reddit post alleged that the individual in question received “zero severance” despite his long tenure.
Broader Protests and Union Involvement
The Reddit controversy coincides with ongoing protests by IT and ITeS workers across cities including Noida, Kolkata, and Pune.
Organized by the All India IT and ITeS Employees’ Union (AIITEU), the demonstrations have called out forced resignations and alleged illegal terminations at TCS.
Protesters carried banners reading “Don’t resign” and “TCS Stop Retrenchment,” demanding greater transparency and accountability.
In one incident, a TCS employee camped outside the company’s Pune office and claimed that the company had not credited his salary.
The image of the employee sleeping on the footpath went viral, further fueling public concern.
Legal and Ethical Implications
The Reddit thread prompted users to discuss legal recourse under Indian labor laws.
Several commenters pointed to the Industrial Disputes Act, which entitles employees to 15 days of wages for every year of service in case of retrenchment.
Others highlighted eligibility for gratuity payments, which could amount to a substantial non-taxable sum for someone with 30 years of service.
Some users advised the affected employee to approach the Karnataka IT Union (KITU), which is reportedly pursuing a case against TCS over similar job cuts.
The incident has reignited conversations around job security, especially for older professionals in the tech industry.
