HR Manager Dismissed After Dispute Over Raksha Bandhan Leave

A Punjab-based HR manager found herself at the center of a heated workplace debate when she objected to her company’s decision to impose a seven-day salary deduction for taking leave on Raksha Bandhan.

The incident has ignited discussions on employee rights, company policies, and the delicate balance between work and personal life.

The Controversial Leave Policy

The dispute unfolded when the company’s management introduced a new rule via WhatsApp: Any employee wishing to take leave on Raksha Bandhan (observed on August 19) would face a hefty penalty—a deduction of seven days’ salary instead of the usual one.

The HR manager, however, believed this policy was both unfair and potentially illegal, as it infringed upon fundamental rights.

HR Manager Stand and Termination

The HR manager, whose identity remains confidential, took a principled stand against the policy. She argued that such a severe pay cut for a single day’s leave was disproportionate and detrimental to employee morale.

In a LinkedIn post, she shared her experience, stating, “I tried to take a stand for what was wrong as per the laws. But I received a termination letter as a result.”

Despite being given a two-week notice, her office access was immediately revoked. The HR manager’s dismissal highlights the tension between advocating for employee rights and adhering to company directives.

Company’s Response and Allegations on HR Manager

In defense of its actions, the company claimed that the HR manager had received multiple warnings for unrelated issues before her termination.

Furthermore, they accused her of attempting to manipulate other employees by encouraging extended leave during the festival period. The company emphasized the importance of attendance and suggested that dissenting employees had the option to resign.

Social Media Backlash and Employee Support

While the company cited prior warnings, social media users rallied behind the HR manager. Many condemned the policy as draconian, questioning whether corporate practices were veering toward a form of modern-day “slavery.”

Comments flooded in, with some calling it “tyranny” and others expressing solidarity with the HR manager’s stance.
