Anupam Mittal, founder and CEO of People Group and a prominent judge on Shark Tank India, recently shared his insights on LinkedIn, challenging the conventional wisdom that tenure guarantees promotions.

Instead, he outlined three key principles—speed, measurable progress, and ownership—that professionals must embrace to thrive in today’s dynamic job market.

His advice has sparked widespread discussion, offering a fresh perspective on career advancement.

The Changing Paradigm of Career Growth

For decades, the formula for career progression seemed straightforward: stay loyal to an organization, and promotions would follow.

Anupam argues that this approach is no longer effective. He explains that markets and industries are evolving at an unprecedented pace.

“Clocking in five years is no longer leveling up,” he stated, emphasizing that professionals must adapt to new realities to stay relevant and competitive.

Anupam’s insights resonate with broader trends in the job market, where agility, innovation, and accountability are increasingly valued.

As industries continue to evolve, professionals must adopt a proactive mindset to navigate challenges and seize opportunities.

His advice highlights the need to align individual goals with organizational objectives. This approach creates advantages for both employees and employers.

The Three Promotion Mantras Shared by Anupam Mittal

1- Speed and Agility Over Experience Anupam highlighted the importance of quick decision-making and adaptability in a fast-paced market. “The market is moving at 10x speed,” he noted. Professionals who take months to strategize and adapt to trends risk becoming outdated. Instead, he advocates for rapid iteration based on first principles, which he describes as the “new intelligence.” This approach enables individuals to stay ahead of the curve and make impactful contributions.

2- Progress Over Effort Drawing from his own career, Anupam shared a valuable lesson: working long hours does not necessarily translate to success. “I’ve worked 90-hour weeks that delivered nothing. And I’ve seen a single well-thought-out project create more impact than months of busyness,” he revealed. He stressed that promotions are earned through measurable impact, not just clocking in hours. Professionals should focus on delivering tangible results and regularly assess their progress to ensure meaningful contributions.

3- Ownership Over Entitlement Anupam compared the modern workplace to an entrepreneurial environment, where taking initiative and being accountable are crucial for advancement. “The workplace isn’t a school where attendance equals passing marks,” he remarked. He encouraged professionals to align their efforts with business objectives, create value, and actively seek the roles and compensation they deserve. Waiting passively for recognition, he warned, is a flawed approach.
