Citigroup has launched a mandatory AI training program for 175,000 employees worldwide, aimed at improving prompt-writing skills for generative AI tools.
The initiative reflects the bank’s broader strategy to embed AI into daily operations and enhance productivity through smarter, faster digital workflows.
Citigroup Training Designed to Improve Prompting Capabilities
The training module, titled “Asking Smart Questions – Prompting Like a Pro,” is being rolled out across 80 global locations.
It is designed to help employees distinguish between basic and advanced prompting techniques, enabling them to generate more impactful results when using AI tools.
According to Peter Fox, Citi’s Head of Learning, the module uses an adaptive learning platform that tailors content based on the employee’s experience level.
Experts can complete the training in under 10 minutes, while beginners may take up to 30 minutes.
Tim Ryan, Head of Technology and Business Enablement, and Anand Selva, Chief Operating Officer, emphasized in an internal memo that well-crafted prompts can accelerate work, surface insights, and amplify impact.
The memo compared effective prompting to asking the right question in a client pitch—both can reveal clarity and create strategic advantage.
AI Tools Already in Use Across Citi
Citigroup employees have already shown significant engagement with AI tools.
In 2025 alone, staff entered over 6.5 million prompts into the bank’s built-in AI systems.
These tools include Citi Stylus Workspaces, which helps employees analyze documents, create presentations, and conduct research.
Citi Assist provides guidance on compliance, HR, finance, and risk policies.
Recently, 5,000 employees gained access to an agentic AI upgrade for Stylus Workspaces, enabling more autonomous research and data analysis.
Additionally, 40,000 developers are using Cognition’s Devin agent and GitHub Copilot to support coding tasks.
Chief Technology Officer David Griffiths noted that these tools reduce the need for manual tasks. He said this enables employees to concentrate more on strategic thinking.
Commitment to Employee Development
Citigroup has positioned this training as part of its ongoing commitment to employee development.
The bank is equipping staff with prompt engineering skills to strengthen their AI capabilities.
This effort aims to build a more agile, AI-literate workforce that can navigate the evolving demands of digital finance.
Employees must complete the training within 60 days, and the company is providing additional general AI education modules to support broader learning.
AI is continuing to reshape workflows across industries. Citigroup’s proactive approach shows its intent to lead in both technological adoption and workforce readiness.
