Bengaluru Outer Ring Road (ORR), home to over 500 IT and tech companies, continues to face severe traffic congestion, especially during peak hours between 9 and 10 am.
In response, city officials—including representatives from the BBMP, BMTC, and Bengaluru Traffic Police—have proposed a set of coordinated measures aimed at reducing vehicular load and improving commute efficiency for thousands of professionals working in the corridor.
The proposals, discussed in a recent summit with IT industry stakeholders, include staggered work timings, mid-week remote work (WFH Wednesdays), and enhanced public transport options.
These recommendations are part of a broader effort to address the chronic gridlock that affects productivity, employee well-being, and operational continuity across the tech ecosystem.
Impact on IT Industry: Operational Adjustments Ahead
The suggested interventions are expected to have a direct impact on how IT companies structure their workweeks.
Firms along the ORR have been advised to begin shifts as early as 7:30 am, rather than clustering start times around 9 am.
This move aims to distribute traffic more evenly and reduce bottlenecks. The proposal for Work From Home Wednesdays is particularly notable.
By encouraging remote work mid-week, authorities hope to create a predictable dip in traffic volume, allowing for smoother flow and reduced stress on infrastructure.
IT firms have been asked to communicate WFH schedules in advance to help traffic planners anticipate and manage congestion.
While many companies already operate hybrid models, formalizing WFH Wednesdays could require adjustments in team coordination, client servicing, and infrastructure usage.
However, industry leaders have expressed cautious optimism, noting that such measures could improve employee morale and reduce commute fatigue.
Bengaluru Public Transport and Infrastructure Upgrades
To support the shift in commuting patterns, the BMTC is preparing to launch air-conditioned buses tailored for tech park employees.
Plans are also underway to set up designated bus bays at key junctions and improve shuttle connectivity between tech campuses.
Authorities will install traffic monitoring cameras to study vehicle movement and identify peak congestion zones.
These insights will inform future interventions, including traffic marshals, bike patrols, and contingency plans for breakdowns.
Additionally, a zero-tolerance policy for illegal parking near junctions and inside tech campuses has been proposed, with immediate towing for violations.
The IT sector has also requested a ban on heavy vehicles during peak hours and better coordination on WFH days to avoid unexpected surges.
Strategic Implications for Workforce Planning in Bengaluru
For HR and operations leaders, the proposed changes signal a shift toward location-aware workforce management.
Companies may need to revisit their attendance policies, shift planning, and employee transport arrangements.
The emphasis on mid-week remote work could also influence how teams schedule meetings, training sessions, and client interactions.
From a talent perspective, predictable WFH days may enhance work-life balance and reduce attrition linked to commute stress.
However, implementation will require clear communication, tech enablement, and buy-in from leadership.
A Collaborative Path Forward
Joint Commissioner of Traffic, Karthik Reddy, emphasized that the meeting was constructive, with all agencies agreeing to collaborate closely.
The proposals are not mandates but advisories, and companies are expected to adopt them voluntarily.
Even partial adoption—by 5–10% of firms—could lead to measurable improvements in traffic flow.
With over 9.5 lakh employees working in the ORR corridor and contributing 36% of Bengaluru’s IT revenue, the success of these measures will depend on sustained coordination between government bodies and the tech industry.
