Infosys Introduces New Worklife Balance Campaign

Infosys has rolled out a new internal campaign aimed at reinforcing work-life balance among its employees, emphasizing adherence to a structured work schedule of 9.15 hours per day, five days a week.

The initiative follows public debate sparked by remarks from Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy.

He had earlier advocated for a 70-hour workweek, which received both support and criticism across corporate and social circles.

The Human Resources department at the company is actively monitoring employee work hours, especially for those working remotely.

It is sending personalized emails to individuals who consistently exceed the standard schedule.

The emails include detailed breakdowns of remote working days, total hours logged, and average daily work time.

They also encourage employees to prioritize their health and overall well-being.

Infosys Email Advisory: Encouraging Mindful Work Practices

The emails sent by Infosys HR teams are framed as supportive advisories rather than disciplinary notices.

They acknowledge employee dedication while cautioning against sustained overwork.

A typical message reads, “While we appreciate your commitment, we also believe that maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial for both your well-being and long-term professional success.”

Employees are encouraged to:

  • Take regular breaks during the workday
  • Communicate with managers if feeling overwhelmed
  • Delegate or redistribute tasks when necessary
  • Minimize work-related interactions during off-hours

The campaign reflects Infosys’ broader effort to foster a sustainable work environment, especially in the context of remote and hybrid work models.

Infosys Return-to-Office Policy and Monitoring Framework

Since November 20, 2023, Infosys has implemented a return-to-office policy requiring employees to work from office premises for at least 10 days per month.

As part of this policy, HR teams have been tracking time spent on work activities, both in-office and remotely, to ensure compliance with company guidelines.

This structured approach to time management is intended to prevent burnout and promote employee effectiveness, aligning with global trends in workplace wellness.

Context: Narayana Murthy’s 70-Hour Workweek Commentary

Infosys’ campaign contrasts with Narayana Murthy’s widely discussed suggestion from late 2023.

He had advocated for young professionals in India to work 70 hours a week to help the country achieve global competitiveness.

Narayana later clarified that his statement was a personal viewpoint, not a mandate, and emphasized that such expectations should not be forcefully imposed.

The debate resurfaced after similar comments from other industry leaders, including L&T Chairman SN Subrahmanyan, who suggested a 90-hour workweek in a viral video.

These remarks have reignited conversations around workplace stress, mental health, and employee rights.

Health Risks and Legislative Attention

Infosys’ campaign also responds to growing concerns about the health implications of extended work hours, particularly among young professionals.

Studies have shown that overwork can lead to poor lifestyle choices and unhealthy routines.

These habits increase the risk of heart disease, stress-related illnesses, and mental health challenges.

In April 2024, the issue was raised in the Rajya Sabha.

Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge questioned the government about the steps being taken to address workplace stress.

The Ministry of Labour and Employment acknowledged the concern and emphasized the need for corporate responsibility in promoting employee wellness.
