Google has updated its Work From Anywhere (WFA) policy, significantly tightening the rules around remote work flexibility.
Under the revised guidelines, even a single day of remote work outside an employee’s designated office location will now be counted as a full week against their annual WFA allowance.
The change, which has already taken effect, reflects a broader shift in the tech industry toward increased in-office presence.
Background: Pandemic-Era Flexibility Reassessed
The WFA policy was introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to support employees working from locations outside their primary office.
It allowed Googlers to work remotely for up to four weeks per calendar year from a different city, state, or country.
This policy was separate from Google’s hybrid work model, which permits employees to work from home two days a week.
However, the updated rules now state that whether an employee logs one WFA day or five in a standard work week, it will be deducted as one full WFA week from their annual balance.
This change has been communicated internally and is already being enforced.
Clarifications and Restrictions
Google has clarified that WFA time cannot be used to work from home or nearby locations.
The policy is specifically designed for temporary relocation beyond normal commuting distance.
Employees using WFA must also align their working hours with the time zone of their temporary location to comply with legal and financial regulations.
Additionally, employees are prohibited from using WFA days to work from other Google offices in different states or countries.
Roles that require physical presence, such as data center operations, are exempt from the WFA framework.
Google Employee Reactions and Leadership Response
The policy update has caused confusion and concern among some Google employees.
During a recent all-hands meeting, one of the most upvoted questions asked why a single Work From Anywhere (WFA) day should be counted as a full week.
The question also raised whether the restriction on working from home could be reconsidered.
John Casey, Google’s Vice President of Performance and Rewards, explained that the Work From Anywhere policy was originally designed to be used in week-long increments.
He clarified that it was never meant to replace the company’s regular hybrid work model.
He emphasized that the policy was originally designed to support short-term flexibility during the pandemic. It is now being realigned to meet current operational needs.
