Google introduced a new performance management and promotion process this May. The company said it is taking a new approach called Googler Reviews and Development (GRAD).

This new process will focus on employee development, learning, and progression throughout the year.

Google’s commitment towards employee satisfaction and engagement is always on the top of the list. The company invent, review and adapt its people practices including the performance review system.

Google had its performance review twice a year and now the company is cutting back on its rigorous, twice-annual performance review after 53% of employees came out against them in surveys.

CEO Sundar Pichai reportedly told employees on Wednesday. Starting in May, reviews will now only take place once a year, but promotions will still be possible twice a year.

The employees will be graded within a new five-point rating system ranging from “transformative impact” to “not enough impact,” with most employees ranking in the middle at “significant impact,” the company said in a blog post.

And ‘GRAD’ is meant to “reflect the fact that most Googlers deliver significant impact every day.”, It added.

The blog post said, “We’ve long had a performance management and promotion process, which has comprised more formal reviews and rating, twice a year. Our people team at Google worked with leaders and partners across the company globally to see how we could evolve these processes to help our employees do the best work of their career.”

The blog post also said, “One check-in will focus on learning and career development at Google.”

Google said it looked at everything, starting with employee feedback, as well as research, and industry best practices, and learned how to design processes for fairness and consistency.

Google said there will be feedback and check-ins throughout the year.
