Meta employees furious as cost-cutting affects office perks

According to a report, Meta, formerly known as Facebook employees have expressed dissatisfaction with the decline in cafeteria options in an effort to reduce costs.

The New York Times Report said that the company has declined facilities including a lack of snacks and cereals at the office, as well as the elimination of free food services and other benefits.

Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg earlier in February declared 2023 the “year of efficiency.” Following the footsteps, the company will also restart assessing staff performance twice a year.

The company has also reduced the following benefits:-

  • Free laundry and dry cleaning services
  • Health and Wellness benefits.
  • The company has also adjusted its free dinner service

Meta is not the only company that has reduced the benefits for employees. Google employees outlining the elimination or reduction of several perks, including some of the company’s micro kitchens that provide employees with free snacks like cereal, espresso, and seltzer water. 

The CEO also urged employees to work from the office to increase efficiency. Additionally, he also said the company’s analysis shows the employees who worked from the office fared better than those who worked remotely.

Mark Zuckerberg said, “As part of our Year of Efficiency, we’re focusing on understanding this further and finding ways to make sure people build the necessary connections to work effectively.”

Earlier, the company had given poor performance reviews to around 7,000 employees. The company has marked the employees as “subpar” in recent performance reviews. The parent firm of Facebook and Instagram also got rid of a bonus metric.

Meta has conducted two rounds of cuts over the last six months. However, Speaking about the layoffs in 2023, there have been 776 layoffs at tech companies with 224,953 people impacted (2,163 people per day). In 2022, there were 1,557 layoffs at tech companies and 243,318 people impacted (667 people per day).
