Driven by AI, India is poised for a significant transformation in its job market, with projections indicating the addition of 33.9 million jobs to its workforce by 2028.

This growth is largely driven by the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies across various sectors.

The report, commissioned by ServiceNow and conducted by Pearson, highlights the potential for substantial employment opportunities in the coming years.

Job Growth Driven by AI

The report forecasts that India’s workforce will expand from 423.73 million in 2023 to 457.62 million by 2028, marking a net gain of 33.9 million workers.

A significant portion of this growth will be in the technology sector. It is projected with an estimated 2.73 million new tech jobs creation by 2028.

These roles will span various fields, including software development, data science, cybersecurity, and more.

The retail sector will lead employment growth, requiring an additional 6.96 million workers to support its expansion.

Following closely, the manufacturing sector will add 1.5 million jobs, while the education and healthcare sectors will see increases of 0.84 million and 0.80 million jobs, respectively.

These sectors are anticipated to benefit from the adoption of AI and automation technologies, which will drive efficiency and innovation.

In-Demand Tech Roles and Impact of AI on Job Market

Certain roles within the technology sector will see significant growth.

Software application developers will see an increase of 109,700 positions. Systems software developers and data engineers will add 48,800 and 48,500 jobs, respectively.

Other in-demand roles include web developers, data analysts, and software testers, with projected increases ranging from 45,300 to 48,500 positions.

AI will serve as a key catalyst for job creation across India’s growth engines, particularly in roles requiring advanced technical skills.

This strategic emphasis on AI and digital skills will not only create more high-value opportunities for professionals but also empower them to build enduring digital careers.

Systems Administrators, for instance, will experience a significant shift, with 6.9 hours of their weekly tasks automated or augmented by emerging technologies.

Future Prospects and Challenges

The integration of AI and emerging technologies presents both opportunities and challenges for India’s job market.

While the growth in tech-related jobs is promising, it also necessitates a focus on skill development and education.

The government and private sector will need to collaborate to provide training programs. They will also provide resources to help job seekers transition into these emerging fields.

India’s job market is on the brink of a major transformation, driven by the adoption of AI and emerging technologies.

The projected addition of 33.9 million jobs by 2028 underscores the potential for significant employment growth across various sectors.

As the country continues to embrace digital innovation, the focus on skill development and education will be crucial.
