A recent report by staffing firm Genius Consultants has revealed that 63% of Indian companies have either frozen hiring or downsized teams in response to escalating geopolitical tensions, particularly conflicts in the Middle East.

The findings, based on a nationwide survey conducted between May 12 and June 6, 2025, highlight the growing impact of global instability on India’s employment landscape.

The survey, which gathered responses from 2,006 employees across sectors, paints a sobering picture of how external conflicts are reshaping internal workplace dynamics—from hiring freezes and salary stagnation to rising anxiety and proactive career shifts.

Key Findings: Hiring Freezes, Downsizing, and Contractual Shifts

  • 63% of respondents confirmed that their companies have either paused hiring or are actively downsizing.
  • An additional 15% observed a shift toward contract-based or freelance roles, indicating a move away from permanent employment models.
  • 36% of employees reported that their salary hikes, bonuses, or appraisals have been negatively impacted.
  • 21% noted increased workload pressure and tighter project timelines.
  • 22% experienced disruptions in international travel or global business exposure.
  • 21% said team morale and job confidence have taken a hit.

These trends suggest that companies are adopting a cautious, cost-containment approach, prioritizing operational continuity over expansion.

Employee Sentiment: Anxiety and Adaptation

The report also delves into the emotional and strategic responses of employees:

  • 30% of respondents admitted they are extremely worried, already noticing early warning signs in their workplaces.
  • 26% described themselves as mildly concerned, closely monitoring developments.
  • In response, 55% are upskilling or enrolling in new certifications to future-proof their careers.
  • 31% are actively exploring new job opportunities or backup roles.

This dual response—concern and action—reflects a workforce that is both anxious and adaptive, seeking to navigate uncertainty with resilience.

Expert Insight: A New Era of Work

Commenting on the findings, R P Yadav, Chairman and Managing Director of Genius Consultants, stated, “This survey is a direct reflection of the times we are in.”

He added, “The external world is reshaping internal work realities at a pace faster than many expected.”

R P Yadav stated, “With 63% of companies freezing or downsizing and employees actively upskilling or seeking alternatives, it is clear that we are not just navigating a moment—we’re transitioning into a new era of work.”

He emphasized the need for transparent communication from employers and agility from employees to weather the evolving landscape.
